Why a Portfolio Should Show the Process

Only the final screen remains. There is no earlier proof, and no option that was cut. The owner feels the result is understood. What was understood is the last scene. The folder does not say which conditions changed on the way to that scene.

The last piece said to choose a similar result by problem and constraint. Even if the conditions match, without process that judgment cannot be made again on the next job. People who hire well do not demand the full minutes. One line of the first problem, one option that was cut, one line of the finish criterion. Those three, and the way of working shows.

The last scene hides the decisions

A finished screen shows only the option that won. Why the losing option was cut, when the budget shrank, what an approver blocked. The hidden decisions are most of the collaboration. Brought into our job while hidden, we order only the winning option. The ordered option may be the losing one inside our constraint.

What to see in the process is five. The first problem and audience. The options reviewed and the options cut. The condition that changed in the middle. The criterion that split the decision. The way done was checked. If the five exist as sentences, the result is material that can be repeated. If they do not, the result is appreciation.

People who hire well do not ban “is it pretty.” They attach three questions beside it. What problem did it solve. Why was the other option cut. By what was it called done. If the three answers stall, the portfolio shows a scene and does not show a judgment.

Not everything has to be disclosed

This is not a demand for internal files and customer names. One line of the opening hypothesis, one mid proof, one sentence of why the final choice was made. Three pieces are enough. If the three cannot be shown because they are secret, say at least the structure that is not secret. If the structure cannot be said either, there is no process.

If the mid proof is almost the final, that is information that nothing changed. Nothing changed is also process. If something changed, what changed is the process. If both remain as sentences, it is visible how to place a change cell on our schedule. If they do not remain, our change can be handled as memory too.

People who hire well attach the three pieces beside the case. An award with no pieces steps down to a reference image. A small job with pieces steps up as a meeting candidate. The order of candidates stops matching the order of glamour. It has to stop matching before the eye steps down from taste.

When a diary does not shrink the decisions

Even if the process looks long, if the end is a feeling, the length is a diary. After reading the diary, we still do not know whether to pass our proof. Choose a vendor without knowing, and the reason for the choice stays in the prose. A team with the same prose can close our done with a different word. A close in a different word meets us at review.

People who hire well check only the last sentence of the diary. By what was it called done. If that sentence is the same kind as our done cell, the diary in front of it becomes material. If it is a different kind, a long diary is still the record of another project. Use another project’s record as our precedent, and the done cell of the quote borrows that record’s word.

An award with no three pieces

An award page has only the final cut. No line of the problem, no cut option, no finish criterion. People who hire well take that page off the meeting list. Taking it off is not ignoring the result. It is not buying, as a precedent, a result with no material for repeating the judgment.

For a job that stays a candidate, they say in advance to attach the three pieces. Hypothesis, one middle frame, the reason for the choice. If they arrive, the meeting opens from those pieces. The final cut is the last five minutes. Seen last, admiration cannot swallow the questions. Admiration that was not swallowed stays a reference, and the pieces shrink the decisions.

If they say the pieces cannot be attached, hear the reason. If it is secret, hear only the structure. If there is no structure either, that job cannot shrink our decision count today. Choose a vendor by a job that cannot shrink decisions, and the reason for the choice is taste again. A vendor chosen by taste invents the empty cells of our page.

The way done was checked is the process

Process is not a count of sketches. It is what the end was closed with. User response, whether the function runs, whether the file moved, whether the operator can edit. If the way it closed differs from our done cell, that process is the process of a different game.

If the only words are “we finished it beautifully,” it can look like process and still have no verdict. Process with no verdict is a published diary. A diary does not shrink the number of decisions on the next project. People who hire well look at process not for an essay, but to shrink the decisions someone would have to invent.

When the way it closed is heard as a sentence, the next question is polite. Inside that sentence, how far did your hand go. If the process is the team’s and the hand is not asked, the whole result enters as one person’s work. That wrapping is the next piece.
