What to Check Before You Post a Short

Walk vertical and three minutes, library audio, and the over-one-minute claim block. Not a ranking list — the items that are hard to fix live.

September 23, 2026

The minute before you post a Short is not for more effects. It is for whether the frame is vertical, whether it stays under three minutes, and whether the sound is allowed on this account. The faster a tool drafts, the shorter and firmer this check should be.

Vertical or square videos uploaded on or after 15 October 2024 are classed as Shorts up to three minutes.(1) Landscape is not a Short. Community guidelines bar spam, scams, and misleading posts. This is not a ranking list.(2)

Frame and length

Keep faces and type out of the UI bands. Pick the cover in the YouTube app. You cannot edit a Shorts thumbnail in Studio.(3) The title is 100 characters. On the upload screen you set visibility and whether it is made for kids.(3)

A first post is safer when people can finish it. Split a long explainer into a series. If you do not want a Short, upload 16:9.(1)

A fast draft still needs a person on sound and length.

Sound and Content ID

You can use songs from the Shorts Audio Library. In a three-minute Short most tracks go up to 90 seconds; some stop at 60 or 30.(1) Royalty-free tracks come from the Studio Audio Library. Those files are described as not receiving a Content ID claim.(4)

A Short longer than one minute with any active copyright claim is blocked worldwide. It will not play, recommend, or monetize. The channel is not struck. You may remove the claimed part or file a dispute.(1)(5) Limits under one minute are unchanged.(1)

Dropping someone else’s recording without permission sits next to reproduction and public transmission under Korea’s copyright act.(6) Do not lay a chart file from the phone onto the cut.

Ten checks before you post

  1. Vertical or square, three minutes or under.(1)

  2. The first seconds show one thing.

  3. Faces and type sit inside the safe area.

  4. The title is 100 characters or fewer and states a fact.(3)

  5. You set made-for-kids.(3)

  6. Audio is from the Shorts or Studio library, or a track you own.(4)

  7. If it is over one minute, nothing claimable remains.(5)

  8. No leftover logo from another app.

  9. Numbers, dates, and claims match the source. If it is an ad, read the labeling act.(7)

  10. People, places, and marks were cleared.

A filled example — the 40 seconds before you post

Same bowl Short. Before you post, check only the lines below. Do not add another effect.

The frame is vertical and 40 seconds. It stays under 3 minutes. Horizontal is not a Short, so the wide room shot stays off. The first two seconds are only the spinning bowl. The bio stays out. “Saturday 14:00” sits clear of the top and bottom buttons. Pick the bowl frame as the thumbnail in the YouTube app. Studio does not edit a Shorts thumbnail, so choose it in the app.

The title, inside 100 characters, is “Bowl on the wheel, Saturday class.” Drop “shocking” and “guaranteed.” If it is not made for kids, set that box to no. Do not upload it blank. The sound is a library track. Forty seconds is under one minute, so it is not the long-Short block rule, but a hit song that would draw a claim still stays off. If you stitch the bowl past one minute, remove any claimed track or do not post it.

“One seat” appears in captions only when that day has one seat. Export again if another app’s logo remains. Crop a large guest face until you have consent.
