What a Shorts Title and Description Must Include

The 100-character title says what appears. The description keeps the next step and the audio credit. Tags are not a ranking trick.

September 25, 2026

A Shorts title and description are not decoration. They say what appears, who it is for, and where the sound came from. The last article checked length and audio. This one fills the words that stay on the upload screen.

YouTube Studio caps titles at 100 characters and descriptions at 5,000. Invalid characters are not allowed.(1) The in-app upload uses the same 100-character title cap.(2)

What belongs in the title

The title is one line for what the video is. Place, product, and the action stay factual. Empty intensifiers sit next to the spam and deception line in the guidelines.(3) Numbers and dates must match the picture and the source document.

Made-for-kids sits beside the title. YouTube asks so it can follow COPPA.(1) If a brand paid, mark branded content. If altered or synthetic footage looks real, disclose altered or synthetic content.(1)

The title states a fact. The description keeps the audio credit and the next step.

What belongs in the description

  • One sentence for who it is for

  • What to do next — book, visit, watch another video

  • A related video from your channel in the Shorts player. It must be public or unlisted and must follow the guidelines.(1)

  • If the track is Creative Commons from the Audio Library, paste the credit Studio gives you.(4)

Tags are for fixing common misspellings. Otherwise they play a small role in discovery.(1) Do not repeat the same words through title, description, and tags. The box reduces confusion; it is not a ranking trick.

Paid praise puts the relationship in the first lines.(5) Discount and qualification claims keep only words you can prove under the labeling act.(6)

Publishing with blanks

A filled example — one title line and the description

Same 40 seconds. The title is “Bowl on the wheel, Saturday class.” Inside 100 characters it says what appears. “Shocking true story” and “guaranteed certificate” are empty emphasis, so they stay out. If the picture says 14:00, the title does not say 10:00.

First description sentence: “Forty seconds for someone seeing a wheel for the first time. One seat, Saturday 14:00.” The next step is “Book from the channel in the pinned comment.” Related video is one public video on your own channel. Do not paste someone else’s channel name into the title.

If the sound is a Creative Commons track from the audio library, paste the credit line Studio gave you. Do not shorten it or drop it. One tag for a misspelling is enough. Do not repeat “ceramics ceramics class studio” across title, description, and tags.

If it is not made for kids, set that and then upload. Turn on the brand label if a brand paid to appear. Your own class without payment does not need a forced label, but a sponsorship names what you received at the top of the description. If you invented the bowl with a generated clip, disclose altered content. Do not upload the settings blank.

Shocking, repeated keywords, another channel’s name

A description that stays near 200 characters: “Forty seconds for someone seeing a wheel for the first time. Saturday 14:00, one seat. Book from the channel in the pinned comment. Sound is from the YouTube audio library.” If Studio gave you a credit line, paste it under that. While editing the title, do not add a number such as “one million views.” That number is not in this video.

Filled boxes are what you hand over when you hire. That is the next brief.
