What to Check Before You Post a Reel
The faster the draft, the shorter the last check should be. Walk ratio, the first seconds, audio, captions, and rights in that order.
The minute before you post a Reel is not for more effects. It is for whether the frame is vertical, whether the first seconds say one thing, and whether audio, captions, and the cover match. The faster a tool drafts, the shorter and firmer this check should be.
Instagram’s own updates ask for Reels that entertain, inspire, or experiment, and they keep pointing people to in-app tools such as text, music, and camera effects.(1) This is not a list for guessing the ranking. It is the list that is hard to fix after the post is live.
Does the frame fill the screen?
Reels are built to be watched full-screen and vertical. Official copy says you can add effects and music in the app.(2) A landscape file leaves bars or gets cropped. Keep faces and type out of the UI bands at the top and bottom.
Make the cover in the same vertical ratio. The profile grid can clip the center. Do not pin a title to the edge.
Do the first seconds do the work?
Creator guides keep returning to the opening. If the first three seconds do not show one thing, length will not save the rest.(3) First Draft can cut silence. A person still chooses whether the first shot is a name, a question, or a result.(4)
Length limits have moved. The product page describes recording and editing up to 20 minutes.(2) New posts are safer when people can finish them. Long explainers split better as a series.
A fast draft still needs a person at the last check.
Will sound and type survive?
Instagram says a Reel can use your original audio, original audio from another Reel, or audio from the Instagram library. Original audio from a feed video cannot be used unless you remix.(5)
Business accounts often have a narrower music set. For a sales or ad Reel, pick library audio or a track whose use is written down. Visible watermarks from other apps are widely reported to weaken recommendations.(3) Export your own master.
Many people watch with sound off. Captions are the copy, not decoration. If auto-captions exist, recheck names and numbers.
Ten checks before you post
The file is 9:16, and key faces and type sit inside the safe area.
The first three seconds show one thing.
The cover still reads in the grid crop.
Names and numbers in captions are correct.
The audio is allowed on this account.(5)
There is no watermark from another app.(3)
Product numbers, dates, and claims match the source document.
People, places, and logos were cleared.
The caption says who it is for and what to do next.
If it is scheduled, the preview matches the cover and the audio.
A filled example — a 15-second Reel
The studio name below is made up. Copy the boxes, not the shop. The Reel is a 15-second notice for a Saturday clay class.
The file is 9:16. The bowl on the wheel sits in the middle. “Saturday 14:00, one seat” stays clear of the top logo and the bottom buttons. A horizontal room shot stays off. It leaves bars and crops the hands.
The first three seconds are only the spinning bowl. The bio and the hello move to one caption line: “Book from the profile link.” The cover is a close bowl. If the grid keeps only the center, the bowl still has to read, so the type does not sit on the edge.
Write down the audio-library track name. A chart song from the phone stays off. On a brand account, confirm that track still plays in that account’s preview. If another app’s logo remains on the last second, export the master again.
Watch once with the sound off. If auto-captions turn “14:00” into a wrong word, fix that word. “One seat” is allowed only when that day really has one seat. A guest’s hands, large in frame, come out unless you have consent.
Box | Written in this example | Left out |
|---|---|---|
First 3 seconds | The spinning bowl | Studio bio, hello |
Captions | Saturday 14:00, one seat | A long line on the edge |
Sound | Library track name | A chart song, a leftover logo |
An empty list is not fixed by switching editors. A filled list is how the tool from the last article finishes the job. Comments and DMs are next.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Can I post landscape?
It may upload, but you get bars or a crop. Cut Reels as 9:16 from the start.
Can I use any song?
No. Instagram lists original audio, another Reel’s original audio, and the library. Business accounts are often narrower.
Are auto-captions enough?
As a draft. A person should recheck names, numbers, and product claims.
What about a file from another app?
Export your own master. A visible watermark from another app is widely said to weaken recommendations.
How long should it be?
The product page describes up to 20 minutes, but a first post is safer when people can finish it.
