The Tools People Use to Make Reels Now

Reels work splits across the Instagram app, First Draft, Edits, and outside editors. Pick by where you post and who cuts.

September 7, 2026

Making a Reel is not first a camera problem. It is a decision about where you cut, where you caption, and where you publish. You can shoot and draft inside Instagram. You can also bring in a file from another editor. Pick the tool by who edits and where it will go, not by a feature list.

Four lines show up most often: the Instagram app, Instagram’s First Draft, Meta’s standalone editor Edits, and a cross-platform editor such as CapCut. Scheduling and the inbox are not editors. They sit later.

What you do inside Instagram

You can record and edit Reels in the Instagram app. Official product copy says you can record and edit videos up to 20 minutes, add effects and music, or use your own audio.(1) Drafts can be saved to the account or the camera roll and opened again.(1)

In-app editing is fast when you cut short and post the same day. It gets tight when one master file must go to several channels, or when you need frame-level work for a long time.

First Draft, a fast rough cut

In August 2026 Instagram began rolling out First Draft on iPhone. You select clips; it trims pauses and builds a first timeline. Instagram said the feature is not generative AI — it uses internal tools to process the footage.(2)

It fits talking-head videos, multi-clip montages, and day-in-the-life footage.(2) Every cut can be undone. The rollout started on iPhone; an Android date was not announced.(2) After the rough cut, captions, cover, audio, and facts still need a person.

Edits, the editor beside Instagram

Meta launched Edits in April 2025 as a phone app for making video. You sign in with Instagram, share to Instagram or Facebook, or export with no added watermark.(3) It includes a frame-accurate timeline, green screen, auto-enhance, and signals such as skip rate.(3)

A December 2025 update added storyboards, templates, title cards, and Reel remixes.(3) In June 2026 Meta previewed a desktop version and an AI assistant that reads performance and suggests ideas. Desktop was “coming soon”; the assistant was in testing.(4)

Edits fits a Reels-only loop with insights in the same house. Teams that sit on a desktop for a long edit, or share one project with Shorts and TikTok, still often keep an outside editor.(4)

When the same file goes to several apps

CapCut has mobile and desktop, and a wide template set. Edits was launched with that seat in mind.(4) If one master goes to Reels, Shorts, and TikTok, keep a clean file in one place. Guidance keeps repeating that a visible watermark from another app weakens recommendations.(5)

Desktop editors such as Premiere, Final Cut, or DaVinci fit teams that already have brand films. For Reels, keep a separate 9:16 sequence.

The editor can change. What you fix first is where the master lives and who cuts it.

Scheduling is not editing

Meta Business Suite is for scheduling and collecting messages on a professional account. It does not replace the cut. Finish the edit in the app, Edits, or an outside editor. DM tools are the next article.

What to pick

Situation

Do not do this

Shoot today, post today

Instagram app, First Draft if you have it

Hunt for a new editor

You mostly make Reels

Edits

Export with a leftover watermark

You also post Shorts or TikTok

Outside editor + a clean master

Upload another app’s screen as-is

A brand film already exists

Recut 9:16 in the desktop editor

Post the landscape cut unchanged

Tools only make a draft faster. Ratio, the first seconds, audio, and captions are the next check.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is the Instagram app enough?

Yes for a same-day short cut. Use Edits or an outside editor when one master must travel, or when you need long frame-level work.

Is First Draft AI?

Instagram said it is not generative AI. It trims pauses with internal tools. It is rolling out on iPhone, and the cut can be undone.

Edits or CapCut?

Edits fits a Reels-only loop with insights in the same house. Teams that need desktop or share a project with Shorts and TikTok still often keep an outside editor.

Why do watermarks matter?

Guides keep reporting that a leftover logo from another app weakens recommendations. Export your own clean master.

Where do you schedule?

After the cut is done, in Meta Business Suite or the professional scheduler. That screen is not an editor.
